History
Smith Mountain Lake, a stunning man-made reservoir, owes its existence to the vision and funding of the Appalachian Power Company. The ambitious project began with the construction of the Smith Mountain Dam in 1960. The initial phase involved the removal of 300,000 cubic yards of forest to access the work site. Once a clear path was established, a vital cable system was installed to transport materials efficiently. This cable played a crucial role in the project's success.

The construction of the dam walls, a monumental task, took three years to complete. By September, the waters of the Blackwater and Roanoke rivers began to flow into the newly formed basin, gradually creating Smith Mountain Lake. On March 7, 1966, the lake was officially filled, marking the completion of a remarkable engineering feat.
